Not a spoon gave a rattle; the room was pristine.

The China was laid out, the tables aligned,

While garlands of ivy and holly entwined.

The shortbread was baked, sugar bowls were all neat,

The scent of warm scones drifted out to the street.

The sheer curtains fluttered, the hearth gave a gleam,

While visions of new guests appeared like a dream.

When out in the lot there arose such a clatter,

The Wallace & Davis’ looked out to see what was the matter.

They peeked past the nutcrackers standing quite tall,

And saw clusters of people coming to call.
